Lake Chapala

Getting around

Ride apps, taxis, and the honest answer about a car

Uber works in the area, but unevenly. Residents report cancellations and long waits, and it gets less reliable the further out you go from central Ajijic — don't count on getting one quickly. DiDi has little to no presence here. Don't plan an arrival, a dinner reservation or a flight home around the app.

What is dependable are the taxis de sitio: Chapala, Ajijic and San Juan Cosalá all have fixed stands you call by phone, and Chapala has 24-hour radio taxi service. A taxi between Ajijic and San Juan Cosalá is a ride of about eight minutes.

And the honest answer: the lakeside is much better with a car. It works without one — on taxis and on asking us — but you'll feel the difference on the third day.
