Try to make the first trip in daylight. Finding a house in a residential development for the first time is a different experience after dark.

The shops, restaurants and nightlife of the lakeside towns are a drive away, not a walk. A rental car makes the stay much easier and much more spontaneous.
Without a car, plan on arranging rides. Ask us and we will help you organize transport for the days you need it — it works far better arranged in advance than flagged down on the street here.
Carry cash. We have not checked which places around the lake take cards, so assume the small ones may not; rides here run on cash.
Assume the lakeside road is dark at night and drive it that way. If you are going out in the evening, decide how you are getting back before you leave.
